For her birthday, Grammy sent Ellie two wonderful cookbooks written especially for preschoolers: "Salad People" and "Pretend Soup." The are by the same author as the "Moosewood Cookbook," based on the recipes from the Moosewood Restaurant in Ithaca, NY. We never did eat at the Moosewood while we lived in the area (we're obviously not vegetarians), but chefs from the restaurant did once visit Alfred University and prepare menu items in the dining hall. How's that for 6 degrees?!
Anyway, today the kids and I decided to make the title recipe. Since the only hard fast rule was to make the people's bodies out of a pear half, we had a great time pulling all manner of ingredients from the fridge and the pantry. We made cottage cheese heads, shredded cheese hair, carrot arms, apple legs, olive eyes, and grape feet and mouths. Both the kids had so much fun coming up with different ways to make their lunch look more "human." Ellie felt a miniature crown made the perfect finishing touch! And Hayden, he just couldn't resist a few nibbles on his pear body before his creation was complete!
